Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival celebrated across India and other parts of the world. It marks the victory of good over evil and is observed on the tenth day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin, typically in September or October.
The festival commemorates the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (unrighteousness). According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama, with the help of his loyal brother Lakshmana, the monkey god Hanuman, and an army of monkeys, fought a fierce battle to rescue his wife, Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana. Dussehra is the day when Rama killed Ravana and ended his reign of terror.
In another tradition, Dussehra celebrates the victory of the warrior goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This narrative highlights the power of the feminine divine and the triumph of good over evil forces.
Dussehra is marked by various rituals and cultural performances. Effigies of Ravana, along with his brothers Meghnad and Kumbhkaran, are burned in grand ceremonies symbolizing the destruction of evil. The celebrations often include dramatic enactments of the Ramayana, known as Ramlila, fairs, and processions.
The festival also marks the end of the nine-day Navratri festival, which is dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Dussehra, therefore, signifies not only the end of a significant religious observance but also the preparation for the upcoming Diwali, the festival of lights.
Overall, Dussehra is a vibrant and joyous festival that brings communities together, fostering a spirit of victory, righteousness, and communal harmony.
