Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is a major Sikh festival celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Born in 1469 in Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, Guru Nanak's teachings laid the foundation for Sikhism, emphasizing the oneness of God, equality, social justice, and the importance of living a truthful and honest life.
The festival is marked with great devotion and enthusiasm by Sikhs worldwide. Celebrations typically begin with Prabhat Pheris, early morning processions that start from the Gurdwara (Sikh temple) and proceed through the local area, with devotees singing hymns and chanting verses from the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. The Akhand Path, a continuous, non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, is conducted in Gurdwaras, concluding on the day of the festival. Special assemblies are organized, where the life and teachings of Guru Nanak are discussed, and devotional songs are sung.
One of the most significant aspects of the celebration is the Langar, a community meal served to all, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion, embodying Guru Nanak's message of equality and selfless service. The festival is not just a religious event but also a time for the community to come together, reflect on the teachings of Guru Nanak, and commit to living by the values of humility, compassion, and oneness that he espoused.
