Diwali (दिवाली), also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India and around the world. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The festival usually lasts five days, with the main celebration occurring on the third day, which falls on the new moon night of the Hindu month of Kartika, typically in October or November.
The origins of Diwali are rooted in various legends and traditions. The most popular story is from the epic Ramayana, where Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana to the kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and the defeat of the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting oil lamps, thus beginning the tradition of illuminating homes and streets with lamps and candles.
Diwali also celebrates the goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. On this occasion, people clean their homes and businesses and decorate them with rangoli (colorful patterns made with powders), and light diyas (oil lamps) to welcome Lakshmi, seeking her blessings for wealth and prosperity in the coming year.
The festival involves various rituals and customs, including the exchange of gifts and sweets, family gatherings, and the bursting of fireworks. The lighting of lamps and fireworks is meant to ward off evil spirits and illuminate the darkness of the night.
Diwali's significance extends beyond religious boundaries, promoting values of unity, peace, and community bonding. It is a time of joy, renewal, and the reaffirmation of positive values, making it a cherished celebration for millions around the world.
