Karwa Chauth (करवा चौथ) is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily by married women in Northern India. Observed on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartika, it is a day-long fast dedicated to the health, longevity, and prosperity of their husbands. The word "Karwa" refers to an earthen pot used during the rituals, while "Chauth" means the fourth day.
The festival begins before sunrise with the consumption of a special pre-dawn meal called 'Sargi,' typically prepared by the mother-in-law. Women then abstain from food and water throughout the day, engaging in prayers and other rituals. They dress in their finest attire, often donning bridal-like outfits with intricate jewelry and henna designs on their hands.
As the day progresses, women gather in groups to listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha, a traditional story that emphasizes the virtues of devotion and loyalty. The fast is broken only after sighting the moon, a moment that holds deep significance. Women view the moon through a sieve and then look at their husbands in the same manner, symbolizing the filtering of bad influences. The husband then offers the first sip of water and a morsel of food to his wife, marking the end of the fast.
Karwa Chauth (करवा चौथ) is more than just a fast; it is a celebration of marital love and devotion. It strengthens the bond between husband and wife, reaffirming their commitment to each other. This age-old tradition, rich in cultural and spiritual significance, continues to be cherished by millions of women across India.
