Shiv Ji Mondays, or "Somvar Vrat," hold special significance in Hinduism, particularly among devotees of Lord Shiva. These Mondays are dedicated to the worship of Shiva, the god of destruction and transformation. Observing the Somvar Vrat is believed to bring blessings, fulfill desires, and remove obstacles.
Devotees who observe the fast typically start their day with a ritual bath, followed by a visit to a Shiva temple. They offer water, milk, honey, and Bilva leaves (Bael) to the Shiva Lingam, a symbolic representation of Lord Shiva. Some may also recite the "Om Namah Shivaya" mantra, which is considered highly auspicious.
Fasting on Mondays is a common practice. Devotees may choose to abstain from food entirely or consume only fruits, milk, and simple vegetarian food. The fast is observed from sunrise to sunset, and in the evening, special prayers are offered, often accompanied by the reading or chanting of Shiva-related texts like the Shiva Purana.
Somvar Vrat is particularly popular during the month of Shravan (July-August), which is considered highly auspicious for Shiva worship. It is believed that during this period, Lord Shiva is more receptive to the prayers of his devotees.
In addition to spiritual benefits, many observe Shiv Ji Mondays with the hope of achieving personal goals such as success, health, prosperity, and marital bliss. The devotion shown during these Mondays reflects a deep respect and reverence for Lord Shiva's role as a protector and destroyer of evil.
